(West Plains, Missouri) – The City of West Plains received federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to complete a Vision Zero Safety Action Plan.
This award is part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program, an initiative to fund regional, local, and tribal plans to prevent roadway deaths and injury. Vision Zero is a commitment to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, making our streets safer for everyone, whether they are walking, biking, or driving. Through strategic planning, community engagement, and targeted interventions, West Plains aims to create a transportation system that prioritizes human life above all else. By addressing factors such as street design, speed management, enforcement, education, and policy development, Vision Zero seeks to prevent crashes before they occur, saving lives and enhancing the quality of life for all residents.

To engage the community and gather valuable insights, the city will be hosting its first public meeting on May 7, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the West Plains Civic Center, located at 110 Saint Louis Street. This event aims to involve the community in discussions about the city’s transportation system. Attendees will have the chance to examine the current conditions of our streets, sidewalks, and other transportation facilities. This meeting provides a platform for individuals to express their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions, which will be crucial in shaping the development of our Vision Zero initiative. Your input is essential as we work towards creating safer and more accessible transportation network that meets the diverse needs of our community.
West Plains is also conducting a community survey and other engagement methods to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. By visiting the project website at www.westplains2025.com you may participate in the community survey, community mapping activities and learn more about the project process and more! Engagement opportunities will be announced via the project website and city social media accounts, by participating in these events’ community members can offer feedback on their experiences, concerns, and ideas related to transportation safety in West Plains.
