Park Board

The Park Board is a nine-member volunteer body composed of citizens of the city or surrounding area; appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council to oversee the city’s parks. Its members, who serve staggered three-year terms, are responsible for organizing themselves, adopting bylaws, and establishing rules and regulations for the use, management, and governance of park facilities in accordance with state law and city ordinances. The board meets the last Wednesday of every month at 4:00 p.m.

GOVERNING LEGISLATION

ARTICLE II. – PARK BOARD
 
Sec. 30-29. – Established.
 

There is hereby established a park board for the city.

Sec. 30-30. – Composition; appointment.
 

The park board shall consist of nine directors who shall be appointed by the mayor with the approval of the city council. The members of the board of directors shall be chosen from the citizens of the city or surrounding area with reference to their fitness for such office.

Sec. 30-31. – Ineligibility of councilmembers.
 

No member of the city council shall be a member of the park board.

Sec. 30-32. – Terms.
 

Before June 1 of each year, the mayor shall appoint three directors for the park board, who shall hold office for three years and until their successors are appointed.

Sec. 30-33. – Organizational meeting; officers.

The members of the park board shall meet immediately after their appointment and organize by the election of one of their number as president and by the election of such other officers as they may deem necessary.

Sec. 30-34. – Adoption of bylaws, rules and regulations.
 

The park board shall make and adopt such bylaws, rules and regulations for its guidance and for the government of the parks as may be expedient and consistent with state law and city ordinance.

Sec. 30-35. – Compensation.
 

No member of the park board shall receive compensation for his service on such board.

Sec. 30-36. – Removal of members.
 

The mayor, by and with the consent of the city council, may remove any member of the park board for misconduct or neglect of duty.

Sec. 30-37. – Vacancies.
 

Vacancies on the park board occasioned by removal, resignation or otherwise shall be reported to the city council and shall be filled in the same manner as original appointments.
